| WHIPPS CROSS: Maternity services among best in capital
In what is described as the most wide-ranging review of national maternity services, standards at London hospitals were found to be lagging behind the rest of the country. Nearby hospitals such as Homerton, Bart's and London, and Barking, Havering and Redbridge Hospital's Trust are all performing below minimum standards. Mairead Wren, director of widwifery at Whipps Cross, said: "Overall we are very pleased with our performance. However, we recognise that we still have work to do to improve our service to women." Health secretary Alan Johnson has announced extra money for maternity services in the wake of the commission's findings. A Bay Area native, Hyde went to UC Berkeley, thinking he would follow in his father's footsteps. Instead, he studied chemistry and entomology, and eventually found himself gravitating toward learning about wine and vineyards. "I realized pretty quickly that I didn't want to be a lawyer," says Hyde with a slow grin. Shortly thereafter, he started working inside wineries with the vintners, but would always end up in the fields. "I was fluent in Spanish, so eventually they would throw me out into the vineyards." It turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Hyde spent more than a decade working crushes at places such as Gallo, Cuvaison and Joseph Phelps before his father found the land in Carneros to purchase. Nearly 30 years later, most of the 138 acres in vine are divided among several high-profile producers.
China: Due for a Reality Check
In short, just because China can mobilize Big Business fast, it doesn't mean it can regulate its industries to make them safe, green, quality-driven, and chock-full of integrity. Any of these problems could blow up, and give the economic miracle a dose of hard, cold reality. .
